AI-enabled research and insights

Designed and built an AI platform that conducts research interviews through adaptive conversation as an alternative to traditional survey instruments, leveraging best practices and playbooks from skilled research professionals. Nexlaw worked with three industry-leaders in legal market research and advisory services to codesign and test the platform at scale; one is launching a broad industry study reaching ~5,000 legal professionals and another is piloting a partner-facing growth program at an Am Law 20 firm using this platform.

Interview depth at survey scale: one engine to run any study to any volume of participants, making rigorous qualitative research fast and repeatable.

BuilderNexlaw Labs

Legal market profiler and firm simulator

Developed a fully-automated research platform that captures profiles of more than 500 top global firms, their full list of published services and roster of profiles with individual-level details. This information is refreshed bi-weekly, identifying changes over time for in-depth research and analysis. Building on this market data, we can also build synthetic law firm "sandbox" environments used to simulate firm financial, operational, and compensation data with high-fidelity to support a range of R&D, learning, and prototyping initiatives.

Leveraged AI to scale insight collection and validation for market and competitive intelligence, product development, and signal detection through today's market noise.

BuilderNexlaw Labs

An agentic framework to productize expertise

Based on 3+ years of research and building in the field, Nexlaw created "Ensemble", an MCP-compatible "expertise gateway" that integrates skills, playbooks, data and other firm resources into teams of AI-powered "experts" and "teams" that can be plugged into modern AI platforms such as Claude, CoPilot, Harvey, or Legora. Ensemble is the shared engine behind several active projects in the Nexlaw portfolio including Harvest, Interviewer, and the Nexlaw Labs Firm Sandbox.

BuilderAm Law 10 Firm

Analytics sandbox for strategic planning and pricing

Consolidated and normalized 10+ years of global financial data for an Am Law 10 Swiss Verein, spanning disparate time and billing system databases and dozens of global P&L centers with multi-currency and regional rate challenges, enriched with market and economic content. The sandbox was privately hosted and created to support a range of financial planning and analytics, budgeting and forecasting, and strategic pricing initiatives that legacy and fragmented reporting, BI, and data warehouse solutions could not.

A single, trusted, firm-wide financial model leveraging existing firm resources and built for decision support vs. more "dashboards".

BuilderGlobal Law Firm

Performance management for partners and firm leaders

As part of a major time-and-billing platform migration, Nexlaw inventoried, consolidated, and redesigned the firm's key metric program definitions and deployed leadership and role-based metrics "panels" for partners and associates. Adjacent work included redesigning the firm's compensation review process covering ~300 partners, extending into HR and compensation data, budgeting and forecasting, and retirement of legacy warehouses and reporting tools.

Transparent metrics that partners trust — and planning and compensation processes that run on shared, defensible numbers instead of exported spreadsheets.

BuilderAm Law 100 Firm

Longitudinal analytics sandbox for strategic planning

Another sandbox initiative, this time providing a multi-year financial data environment to underpin the study and drafting of a revised five-year strategic plan. We consolidated and classified years of fragmented historical financials into one consistent analytical model leadership could use in planning sessions, targeted analytics, and business case creation and validation, leveraging existing resources without introducing new, complex, and expensive "analytics products".

Gave the strategy team clean, trustworthy data to pressure-test growth scenarios in real-time and to build the business cases behind each strategic bet.

BuilderHealthcare Data Company

High-volume data platform assessment & re-architecture

Assessed and re-architected a high-volume collection pipeline for a market-access data business tracking how U.S. health plans cover prescription drugs — formulary status, tiering, and prior-authorization and step-therapy restrictions — across thousands of plans and their covered-lives counts, updated continuously over time.

Core architectural changes that lifted processing throughput and data accuracy while cutting the operational cost of maintaining a constantly-changing national coverage dataset.

AdvisorAm Law 200 Firm

Lateral partner hiring analytics and predictive modeling

Gathered and analyzed 3+ years of lateral hiring data from LPQs, compensation and offer letters, and time and billing actuals to build regression and time-series models of lateral partner performance and contribution. Translated and presented findings and recommendations to leadership, leading to improved hiring practices and policies.

Turned instinct-driven and reactive hiring into policy and reusable analytics to enable better decision making and ongoing monitoring.

OperatorPE Portfolio

Launched a PE operating-partner and portfolio analytics practice

Co-designed an operating-metrics advisory practice for a $5B private equity firm, and worked across several portfolio companies including benchmarking an ~$80M software business against SaaS norms and building its connected BOD and financial sponsor reporting stack, analyzing and optimizing service and support staffing and systems within a SaaS practice management provider, and advising on several legal vertical transactions.

Acted as a practical bridge between port co SLT and financial team, defining and applying SaaS and industry best practices to maximize EBITDA and expected "rule of 40" performance.

AdvisorMultiple Global & Am Law 200 Firms

Law firm innovation investment portfolio analytics

Conducted a full capability and commercial review and assessment of each firm's innovation investments — the people, projects, and systems it had funded — evaluating for value, opportunities to improve, and ultimately client and partner ROI. This would sometimes include review of specific initiatives or market-facing opportunities: for example, a full investment-grade review of a contract-review offering including market and competitive analysis, creation of a full economic model including the firm's own captive ALSP resources, to inform leadership on commercial and investment decisions.

A clear-eyed portfolio view that let leadership concentrate innovation spend on the efforts most likely to return value and retire the rest.
